Zereth Mortis was created by the First to create an afterlife. You can think of it as being hidden within the fabric of the Shadowlands itself. It is a sort of "behind the scenes" of the afterlife that you have traveled to in WoW Shadowlands. It is the land where the ancestors, the First Ones, created all the realms of the Shadowlands.

Visually a blast: Zereth Mortis

Geographically, Zereth Mortis is divided into an arid desert biome - perhaps showing what the realm looked like when the First established this area - and a lushly forested biome - a testing ground for their experiments with plant and animal life. The water in Zereth Mortis is walkable, creating a threshold between it and another, more pristine area below. In addition to the Automa, the realm hosts a broker faction called the Enlightened Ones, who try to protect the secrets of the First Ones.

In terms of design, Zereth Mortis has a lot of inspirational SicFi DNA from the 1950/60/70s, such as Forbidden Planet, Starship Enterprise (the series with Shatner/Nimoy), or the covers of the old Perry Rhodan issues.
